What a great blessing and joy
it is to be called to be your rector. Lyle and I are very eager
to get to know each of you and you us.
We come to you by way of Sewanee, TN where
I attended seminary. But, it was a long and precious journey
discerning my call to priesthood.
My path to Borrego Springs began in a
rural community, outside Cincinnati, OH where I was raised in a
large (five sisters and a brother), devout Catholic family. I
went to college at the University of Colorado in Boulder, and
there I grew to love hiking and camping and to care passionately
for the environment. Leaving the mountains with tears streaming
down my face I headed east, and went to graduate school at
Harvard in urban planning.
During my career as an urban planner and
environmental consultant, I noticed that my greatest joy was in
caring for people. In my parish, I began visiting the sick and
homebound, and then began to volunteer at a local hospital doing
spiritual sup-port. This ministry gave me new life and I wanted
to do it all the time. God opened the door, and I was called to
be a chaplain at Johns Hopkins Hospital and a campus chaplain at
Towson University. Serving in these ministries I felt the strong
and undeniable pull on my heart to priesthood. I entered the
official discernment process in the diocese of Maryland.
Our daughter Sarah presently lives in
Boulder, CO where she went to college and works for an energy
engineering and sustainable design consulting firm. Our daughter
Emily just moved to Los Angeles from Washington, DC where she
was working as a digital media consultant making films for the
U.S. military services. Two of my sisters presently live near
San Diego.
I am delighted to make Borrego Springs my
new home!
Rector Laura Brecht
